The Jars

Spare change saving jars are so fun!  I think everybody needs one (especially if you have young kids), whether you are living the American dream, a family struggling to get by each month, or somewhere in between.

We have a couple jars going right now.  We have the jar that my 5 year old started when she was 2.  It is for kids with cleft palates- she is so close to having enough to sponsor a baby to have the surgery to correct it!  We also have our family "we're gettin a back yard" fund.  Our back yard is currently a gravel driveway and instead we want it to be a place for the kids to play.  Even though we could set aside money in our budget each month to save up for it, watching the jar grow each day with our spare change is more fun for us and the kids, and the reward will be so sweet when we cash in to make our project happen!

Chris and I are both "get it now" type people.  Neither one of us were blessed with a huge amount of patience :)  Since we have switched over to cash only, that combined with our jars enable us to be a little more patient and also teach our kids that sometimes it takes time to get the things you want.  Sounds a little old school, but we are loving it!

If you have a family savings jar, I'd love to hear about it in the comment section!

  1. So neat Jazz! I love the cleft palate savings. What a difference that will make to a child. We have what we call "a stash cash cup" where we save to buy small things that we each want (Greg & I). Most of our coins go to the kids' piggy banks when we pay them to do small jobs around the house. Call in advance when you go to a bank to cash in your jars...last time we did this we spent 45 min. at the bank with 3 impatient kids counting coins. Can you believe the bank had no machine??? Either call ahead to check or count ahead yourself to spare yourself a headache at the bank. Julie R.
